Brett Armstrong
Brett Armstrong, author of the award-winning novel, Destitutio Quod Remissio, started writing stories at age nine, penning a tale of revenge and ambition set in the last days of the Aztec Empire.  Twenty years later, he is still telling stories though admittedly his philosophy has deepened with his Christian faith and a master’s degree in creative writing.  His goal with every work is to be like a brush in the Master artist’s hand and his hope is the finished composition always reflects the design God had in mind.  He feels writing should be engaging, immersive, entertaining, and always purposeful.  Continually busy at work with one or more new novels to come, he also enjoys drawing, gardening, and playing with his beautiful wife and son.
His latest book is Day Moon (Tomorrow’s Edge Book 1).

My Review

Day Moon (Tomorrow’s Edge Book 1) by Brett Armstrong was a well written book with an interesting plot line. I found that it was very difficult to force myself to put it down once I had begun reading it and as such I finished it in two sittings. I liked the idea of everyone having access to the same knowledge, but the idea of destroying all physical books kept me skeptical and the conspiracy behind the program was so much larger than I suspected. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait for the follow up!

My Review
I found the idea that the events of Path of Lucas: The Journey He Endured by Susanne Bellefeuille were based upon real events to be interesting. The story of  Lucas Clarkson was an incredible read.  Lucas Clarkson was a character that felt more like a real person than a character in the pages of a fictional book.
I enjoyed the way that the story was told from the perspective of Lucas Clarkson's daughter as it gave a female view of what would have been a man oriented story. The setting of the book ranged from the 1950's to present day in Canada. I liked the fact that the book took place in a different country as it offered insight to what life is like in Canada for those that live there.
The book itself felt like it was written by an experienced author so I was shocked when I went to look for more books by Susanne Bellefeuille and I discovered that this was her first book. It was actually rather disappointing to find that it was the only book written by  Susanne Bellefeuille that was available for purchase.

Martha Stewart's Slow Cooker

Cook it slow, cook it smart

Leave it to the experts at Martha Stewart to figure out the best ways to use this favorite appliance. The 110 recipes in this book make the most of the slow cooker’s assets (low heat, hands-off cooking), while also uncovering its hidden potential. Readers will find that they can not only braise cuts of meat until meltingly tender and let soups and stews simmer away untended, but also gently poach fish, cook up creamy scalloped potatoes, and bake a perfect cheesecake. This book has everything home cooks need to maximize flavor and make life a whole lot easier.

My Review
Martha Stewart's Slow Cooker was a well organized cookbook that had a good number of images to show what the finished recipes should look like. I found the layout of the cookbook to be perfect as it was easy to locate the recipes that I needed. Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the cook book.

A Spoonful of Grace: Mealtime Blessings in Bite-sized Pieces

A Spoonful of Grace by Annette Hubbell
Book Details:

Book Title:  A Spoonful of Grace: Mealtime Blessings in Bite-sized Pieces
Category:   Christian Living; 444 pages
Genre:  Family devotional, Children's devotional
Publisher:  Credo House Publishers
Release date:  Feb 2017
Tour dates:  Aug 7 to 25, 2017
Content Rating:  G

Book Description:

Just 2 minutes each day can change your family meal time for a lifetime.

A Spoonful of Grace is a collection of 366 evening meal graces taken from all 66 books of the Bible and designed to provide meaningful exposure to prayer and the Bible at a most opportune time: the family evening meal.

The Scripture/grace devotions are inviting, can be grasped at several levels, and are brief enough (about two minutes) to hold the attention of hungry kids. Here's why:

  • Each day has an application section called Grace Notes: ideas and quotes to further illustrate the message and stimulate conversation.
  • Sundays are for Story Graces. These 52 devotions are a bit longer to afford the suspenseful, engrossing reading of stories such as David and Goliath, Daniel in the lions’ den, and Jonah and the big fish.
  • Special Graces are celebrations such as  Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays.
  • Each grace:
    • Supports discussions of God’s attributes and of faith-based values, offering moral examples like forgiveness, friendship, honesty, trust, even table manners.
    • Creates curiosity about the Bible and ways in which Scripture can be applied to today’s issues.
    • Demonstrates how the act of praying together lifts one’s own spirit; fosters praise; and increases mutual feelings of appreciation, gratefulness, and accountability.
    • Teaches without overt instruction, similar to hiding extra veggies in the spaghetti sauce.
    • Remind us that our food, as well as God’s countless other daily blessings, is a gift.

Evy Journey
Evy Journey has always been fascinated with words and seduced by beautiful prose. She loves Jane Austen and invokes her spirit every time she spins tales of love, loss, and finding one’s way—stories she interweaves with mystery or intrigue and sets in various locales. SPR (Self Publishing Review) awarded Evy the 2015 Independent Woman Author bronze for her writing.
She’s lived and traveled in many places, from Asia to Europe. Often she’s ended up in Paris, though—her favorite place in the world. She’s an observer-wanderer. A flâneuse, as the French would say.
The mind is what fascinates her most. Armed with a Ph.D., she researched and spearheaded the development of mental health programs. And wrote like an academic. Not a good thing if you want to sound like a normal person. So, in 2012, she began to write fiction (mostly happy fiction) as an antidote.
Evy’s latest book is the contemporary women’s fiction, Hello, My Love.

My Review
Hello, My Love by Evy Journey was an interesting book about love in unlikely places. To me in embodied the saying do not judge a book by its cover in the relationship between Greg Thorpe and Elise Halverson. I really liked the author's writing style as she did a great job in creating interesting characters who were fully developed in a way that made them feel like real people. Elise Halverson quickly became my favorite because I could empathize with as a fellow woman on her feelings towards Greg at the when they first met. Overall, I enjoyed the book and I hope the author decides to continue writing in this genre!

Puha (Master of the Wild Book 1) by J. Bradley Van Tighem

Puha (Master of the Wild Book 1) by J. Bradley Van Tighem
Puha (Master of the Wild Book 1) by [Van Tighem, J. Bradley]Many Wolves, a 12-year-old boy adopted by Lipan Apaches, is haunted by memories of mounted men with painted faces killing his white-skinned parents. When Laughing Crow, the powerful leader of the Nokoni Comanche band responsible for the killings, discovers his Lipan village and asks for the white-skinned boy in exchange for peace, Many Wolves flees. In the harsh desert wilderness, nourished by the salty waters of the Pecos River, he learns to survive alone with his trained wolf hawks.

Five years later, the Nokoni leader’s son is killed by a Lipan arrow, which sets Laughing Crow on a trail of blood and vengeance. Many Wolves, now hardened by nature and empowered with a gift to walk with the spirits of his animals, is forced out of seclusion to confront his nightmare and protect his Lipan village.

Puha, the Comanche word for “spiritual power,” is an unconventional western story set in the late 1700s, before Texas was settled with Colt revolvers and Winchester rifles: a time when vast herds of buffalo roamed the Southern Plains, grizzly bears and wolves thrived, and the Comanche rode unchallenged on painted ponies.

Puha immerses the reader in a forgotten time of American History when indigenous people lived free and in harmony with nature.

Biography

J Bradley Van Tighem

Award-winning author J. Bradley Van Tighem was born and raised in California, a sixth-generation Californian. He is an avid nature buff, especially fond of birds of prey and reptiles. He dabbled in falconry for several years, but realized he couldn't dedicate enough time to it with a full-time job as a Java programmer and two sports-loving teenage boys.

His fiction attempts to capture his love of falconry and the Native American cultures, specifically the Apache and Comanche tribes of Texas. The first book of the Master of the Wild Series is entitled "Puha" and is set in the 1700s, unsettled Texas, before Rangers, revolvers, and rifles. A western without cowboys during a time when Comanches, "the most powerful tribe in American history" as coined by historical author S. C. Gwynne, roamed the Southern Plains on their painted ponies. "Puha" blends "My Side of the Mountain" with "Dances With Wolves."

He hopes to publish the final story in the Master of the Wild Series, entitled "Sangre," in 2018.

My Review
Puha (Master of the Wild Book 1) by J. Bradley Van Tighem was an enjoyable book to read. I liked how the author kept the book historically accurate, while also adding his own twists and characters to the time period. I loved the author's portrayal of the Native Americans and the way the Native American culture was portrayed in this book. I felt like this book actually taught me about what the Native Americans were like both as people and as a culture. However, it was not some boring history book instead the author worked the Native American cultural elements into the story line in such a way that I did not realize how much I was learning about them until I stopped and thought about it. I personally feel that this would be a great book to assign to students in English classes as not only would be the perfect book for a book report or project, but it would also serve as a nice lead in to the Native American history that students would explore in their history classes.

My Review
San Francisco Nights is the 7th book in the series, but I had no problems getting into it without having read the previous books. The only thing I felt like I missed out on was some character development from the previous books. The plot line was well constructed and I liked how I was able to try and solve what was happening alongside Sam.

My Review
Hello Stars By Alena Pitts with Wynter Pitts was a very cute book that is prefect for young tweens and teens as it shows what it really means to be in the spotlight. Yet, it does so in an appropriate way that will not offends or upset children. I found Lena to be a well rounded character that would be interesting to most girls who want to be an actress.

Convicted A Crooked Cop, an Innocent Man, and an Unlikely Journey of Forgiveness and Friendship by Jameel McGee and Andrew Collins with Mark Tabb

Jameel McGee: “For the next three years not a day went by that I didn’t think about my son who I had never seen and the cop who had kept me from him. And for most of those three years I promised myself that if I ever saw this cop again, I was going to kill him. I intended to keep that promise.”

Andrew Collins: “I watched this angry man march through a crowd, a little boy and another man struggling to keep up with him....The man walked straight up to me, stopped, and stuck out his hand. I took it. “Remember me?” he asked in a tone that sounded more like a threat than a question.
Somehow, a name came to me. ‘Jameel McGee,’ I replied.”

It reads like a gripping crime novel…except this story really happened.

Racial tensions had long simmered in Benton Harbor, a small city on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, before the day a white narcotics officer--more focused on arrests than justice—set his sights on an innocent black man. But when officer Andrew Collins framed Jameel McGee for possession of crack cocaine, the surprising result was not a race riot but a transformative journey for both men.

Falsely convicted, McGee spent four years in federal prison. Collins also went to prison a few years later for falsifying police reports. While behind bars, the faith of both men deepened. But the story took its most unexpected turn once they were released--when their lives collided again in a moment brimming with mistrust and anger. The two were on a collision course—not to violence—but forgiveness.

As current as today’s headlines, this explosive, true story reveals how these radically conflicted men chose to let go of fear and a thirst for revenge to pursue reconciliation for themselves, their community, and our racially divided nation.

My Review
Convicted A Crooked Cop, an Innocent Man, and an Unlikely Journey of Forgiveness and Friendship  by Jameel McGee and Andrew Collins with Mark Tabb was an interesting book to read because it was a non-fictional book that was written using a writing style similar to fictional books. The story was inspirational because of the level of forgiveness the two people were able to accomplish.

My Review
The Sullivans Boxed Set was an interesting series with each book in the set being able to stand on its own. The Sullivan family is made up of of seven siblings and each of the three books focuses on one of the siblings' romantic life. Each one of them found the woman of their dreams, but winning her heart, protecting her, and keeping her heart is not as easy as a single drink. Instead each of the love interests has her own life problems and if the Sullivan of the book wants her heart he is going to have to be ready for anything. While I did enjoy each of the three books the first one with Chase Sullivan and Chloe Peterson was my favorite. There is just always something special about the first book in any series.
