THE SPECTER OF THE INDIAN: RACE, GENDER, AND GHOSTS IN AMERICAN SEANCES,

The Specter of the Indian

Inside the Book

Title: THE SPECTER OF THE INDIAN: RACE, GENDER, AND GHOSTS IN AMERICAN SEANCES, 1848 – 1898
Author: Kathryn A. Troy
Publisher: SUNY Press
Pages: 200
Genre: Historical Nonfiction
The Specter of the Indian unveils the centrality of Native American spirit guides during the emergent years of American Spiritualism. By pulling together cultural and political history; the studies of religion, race, and gender; and the ghostly, Kathryn Troy offers a new layer of understanding to the prevalence of mystically styled Indians in American visual and popular culture. The connections between Spiritualist print and contemporary Indian policy provide fresh insight into the racial dimensions of social reform among nineteenth-century Spiritualists. Troy draws fascinating parallels between the contested belief of Indians as fading from the world, claims of returned apparitions, and the social impetus to provide American Indians with a means of existence in white America. Rather than vanishing from national sight and memory, Indians and their ghosts are shown to be ever present. This book transports the readers into dimly lit parlor rooms and darkened cabinets and lavishes them with detailed séance accounts in the words of those who witnessed them. Scrutinizing the otherworldly whisperings heard therein highlights the voices of mediums and those they sought to channel, allowing the author to dig deep into Spiritualist belief and practice. The influential presence of Indian ghosts is made clear and undeniable.

My Review
The Specter of the Indian was a well-written book that I personally enjoyed reading. I found the book's approach to sharing elements of native american culture and spirituality interesting. This was a new type of book for me, but I was so glad that I took the time to read it as I feel that I have learned quite a bit from it. I would love it if the author wrote a sequel!

Nina Fortunova wasn’t supposed to end up almost thirty, divorced, with her dreams of winning shattered. She teams up with Jorge Gonzalez, a Latin dancer, to reinvent the flashy Smooth style. When the Chairman of the Judges offers to throw the competition in their favor, Nina must decide how far she will go to win, even if it means losing Jorge.

Carly Martindale is doing everything she’s been taught not to do—placing her happiness first by dancing with Trey Devereux, the former three-time champion who’s returned to competition for mysterious reasons. Carly becomes obsessed with Trey and allows him to control her every move at great risk to her physical and emotional health. How far will she sacrifice herself, so Trey and she can win? My Review
The Winner: A Ballroom Dance Novel by Erin Bomboy was a well written book about following your happiness and knowing what really makes a person happy. I loved the morale dilemmas that were in this book because they really made me stop and think about what I would do if I had to decide if I would rather be guaranteed a win unfairly or do my best fairly and win or lose on my own skill. Nina Fortunova and Carly Martindale were my two favorite characters because I loved their dynamic with each other and with their dance partners. Overall, I enjoyed this novel quite a bit!

My Review
As a psychology student I found Life Long by Ronald L. Ruiz to be particularly interesting with Ray Lopez's schizophrenia. I liked the way that it seemed very realistic and the role it played in the story. So often main characters are free of any and all mental problems even minor ones, which makes them all seem too perfect. I found Ray to be a very realistic character as he had very real flaws that played into his character and his decisions. Besides the well written psychological elements this book had a nice thrill of adventure mixed in with how Ray how he is on the run with a bag of cash. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book!

My Review
So first off I would advise reading Watcher before reading Carbon (Book Two in the Watcher Series) by AJ Eversley as the second book will be very confusing without the background information, character development, and plot line understanding gained from reading Watcher. I liked the fact that Sawyer Russo was still the main character even if she was no longer a Watcher, but instead a Carbon. I understand why she had to become a Carbon for the story line to progress onward, but I really liked her as a Watcher and I was sad to see her lose that. Sawyer may have changed, but unlike Katniss in the Hunger Games she never lost what made her Sawyer instead she maintained her personality and goals in the face of all the changes the she faced. Overall, I really enjoyed reading Carbon, but between the two Watcher was my favorite!

Inside the Book

Fix Your Diet Fix Your DiabetesTitle: FIX YOUR DIET FIX YOUR DIABETES
Author: Tony Hampton, MD
Publisher: Windy City Publishers
Pages: 168
Genre: Self-Help
BOOK BLURB:
Want to fix your diabetes?  In this book, I share with my diabetic and borderline diabetic readers that they have the power to reverse or prevent diabetes simply by changing their diets.  It starts with how you think.  By removing old beliefs to new ones that better serve you, the path to recovery from diabetes can be that simple.  Once I provide the rationale for changing old beliefs to more productive ones, I then share with you ways to stay motivated as you journey to a new way of eating.  You are then given a deeper understanding of why so many people have diabetes.  This knowledge will allow you to remove thoughts you may have had where you blamed yourself for having diabetes.  You are then given tips on how to maintain the motivation needed to make a successful transition to a diabetic friendly diet.  Additional knowledge is given about the many complications which could occur when this condition is not well controlled.  Empowered with the understanding of why diabetes occurs and its many complications, you will be given a case for changing how diabetes is treated.  This is done by changing the focus of diabetes management away from the symptoms (elevated glucose), which is how we currently manage this condition, to treating the cause of the disease (insulin resistance).  You are then given the rationale for increasing healthy fats in your diets while reducing starchy carbohydrates and processed foods.  Once this is explained, examples of foods that should be considered for smoothies, snacks, and dinner are given so you will know how to choose foods which are best.   Finally, tips on how to avoid being fooled by marketing labels and claims of so-called healthy foods provide the framework by which great dietary choices can be made.  This new approach to reversing diabetes with diet will reverse diabetes in nearly anyone willing to make these simply lifestyle changes.

My Review
If Truth Be Told was a very interesting book about Om Swami's journey from a multimillionaire to a monk. I found it interesting how he had all the money a person could want and yet found true fulfillment not in his money, but in his calling as a monk. I found the journey very interesting and I really liked how the author included aspects of childhood and not just adulthood in the book. Overall, I found the book to be rather inspirational and I would recommend it to anyone who feels like they are missing something in their life.

Swiyyah Nadirah Woodard was selected as a Bay News 9 Everyday Hero, which was seen by two million viewers, for publishing a book and teaching the community about her own battle with mental illness. She was hospitalized six times and misdiagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Her first book, Don’t Call Me Crazy! I’m Just in Love, became required and suggested reading in Reading, Writing, Abnormal Psychology, and General Psychology classes at a four year Institution.
She was born in the housing projects of Saint Petersburg, FL. Her father left when she was three so she was raised in a single parent home. At the age of five she was
molested by her eight year old brother. She later started school, she had slurred speech and didn’t care to make friends so she was bullied by her peers. At the age of eight, she wanted to kill herself because a girl wanted to fight her. She looked into the medicine cabinet for medication. Thank God, she couldn’t find any.
As a teenager she was physically abused by her step dad. The abuse was so severe, God blocked it from her memory. At the age of 20 the brother that molested her committed suicide, which was devastating to her and the entire family. Swiyyah has always viewed herself as normal. She never received any disciplinary problems in school, made good grades, and received her BA degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida.
When the doctors misdiagnosed her with the most debilitating mental disorder known in mental health, paranoid schizophrenia, she denied it. She questioned their expertise. She refused to take medication. She was then hospitalized six times. Her family took a picture of her at her worst and that’s when she knew she needed help. She has been taking medication now for ten years without a relapse.
She is now a published author and a National Inspirational Speaker. Her first book is entitled, “Don’t Call Me Crazy! I’m just in Love,” and is inspired by her true story.
She was raised Muslim and the revelations she received from God and placed in her books, didn’t make any since until she meet her Christian husband 14 years after her first relapse.

My Review
As a psychology student and a Christian I personally found DON’T CALL ME CRAZY! I’M JUST IN LOVE WITH GOD to be a very interesting book because it was inspires by a true story. After finishing the book and reading about Anika and the effect of both mental problems and religion had on her life I felt a deep desire to find and read about the true story that inspired this book as I would love to know what was fact and what was fiction. I found  Anika's story to be inspirational because it truly shows how God can help a person to overcome anything!
